Marble Countertops

Marble is one of the most of commonly used natural stones that has existed for centuries and still has uses to this day. As far as countertops go, marble countertops are considered the best of the best. You could never go wrong with a marble countertop as it just goes perfectly with everything and has such an elegant look that it instantly boosts the aesthetic appeal of any environment.

Marble countertops are amazingly versatile but sadly can not last forever. They can, however, last extremely long if kept in good condition and looked after properly. In order to ensure that your marble countertop stays just as perfect as the day you got it, here are some basic do’s and don’ts when it comes to keeping marble countertops.

Dos:
While marble is a pretty durable substance, its not very strong against acid. Acid has a corrosive effect on marble which can leave it discoloured and even leave permanent blotches which would ruin your otherwise beautiful marble countertop. You have to protect your marble. A lot of consumables have acid in them, from the food we eat to the drinks we have. If anything is spilt, you must clean it up immediately as it could leave marks on your countertop. Use a coaster or placemat for your beverages, so you don’t leave rings on the marble.

You have to make sure you clean the marble countertops regularly. You should use a special microfiber cloth to clean the surface of the marble, and also purchase a special marble cleaner from your local convenience store. Conventional cleansers can damage marble and leave it discoloured, which is why it is advisable to get proper marble cleaner.

Don’ts:
One misconception about marble countertops is their durability. Yes, marble is a very durable substance; however, it is not unbreakable. If you put too much weight on them, they can be prone to either break or crack depending on the amount of weight. Never stand or sit on a marble countertop; they are not designed to be taking on that much weight.

Do not leave hot pans or pots directly on the surface of your countertop. It can damage the marble leaving stains and even cause discolouring. Even food items should not be left directly on the surface as most contain acid which can harm your marble. Also, always use a cutting board or others of the sort. Do not attempt to cut directly on the countertop as it is most likely to leave scratches. When cleaning, don’t use abrasive materials as it can also leave scratches on the marble countertop.
